The Oscars attract the attention of Internet users

The Monday after the Oscar night attracted about a million more Internet users to websites devoted to film than on an average day, according to the analysis of data from the Mediapanel study. There were not only more Internet users - they spent more time on film websites than usual.

Selected websites from the "Films, series, cinema, TV program" category were analysed by Gemius Polska: noizz.pl - film, eska.pl - cinema, filmweb.pl, interia - film, gazeta.pl - culture, WP - film, onet.film . A period of 2.5 months was analyzed (from January 1 to March 13, 2023).

According to the data, in January selected websites were visited by an average of 1.9 million people a day. On Monday, March 13, just after the Oscars ceremony, this number increased by almost a million, to 2.85 million Internet users. An analysis of Mondays alone since the beginning of the year confirms this observation: before Oscar night, websites dedicated to film attracted an average of 1.85 million weekly, which means that they gained 1 million new users the day after this year's gala.

Film topics not only attracted a larger group of people - their involvement in the content also increased and reflected in the time spent on film websites. While on Mondays in 2023 the average user spent 2 minutes 50 seconds on film-related websites, on March 13 he stayed on them for almost 4 minutes.

A comparison of the data for the film websites with last year shows that the popularity of the Oscar-related topics is lower this year than it was in 2022, when 3.23 million people visited websites dedicated to films the day after the awards ceremony. However, this year's result is better than that of 2021 - then the number of Internet users interested in cinema amounted to 2.19 million the day after the Oscars.

It is worth noting that the subject of the Oscar was raised not only by cultural and film websites. The most important, and certainly the most popular film award was also covered in the general media. The data on users and time indicated above does not reflect the entire interest enjoyed by the Oscar news, but only a part of it.

Finally, we present data for the entire category "Films, TV series, cinema, TV programmes", which, in addition to film-related pages, also includes, among others, VOD and OTT services.

About Mediapanel Research

Mediapanel is the first cross-media study in Poland based on a single source. The study combines site-centric measurement (measurement scripts at the site and application level) and user-centric measurement (panelists' behavior). In the production of data, we use proprietary, internationally recognized methodologies and algorithms. The Mediapanel study provides a complete and reliable picture of the Polish online market. It offers the possibility of analyzing and comparing the viewership of websites, applications and streaming materials on various types of devices, optimization of advertising budgets, comparison of traffic on desktops and laptops at home (PC-home) and at work (PC-work), as well as determining the position of the entity and its competition.
