Will Disney buy Netflix?

There is buzz online about Disney’s potential acquisition of Netflix. Is it likely and why would the American media giant take this step?

Radosław Gołąb, Gemius director of advertising business development for the EMEA region, believes that Netflix would be to Disney just another business to diversify its revenue streams. For the streaming platform, acquisition by a giant like Disney would definitely strengthen its position.

‘Disney is already monetizing its content through numerous platforms, not just Netflix. It sells the rights to air its movies on TV; it is the owner of Maker Studios; it profits from entertainment parks and sells products bearing its brand. It makes perfect sense that Disney would acquire Netflix, especially since this may be a long-term strategy aimed at providing online content,’ says Gołąb.

‘Disney’s acquisition of Netflix seems even more probable considering the fact that Disney has acquired 33% of the shares in BAMTech, a company handling the streaming of Major League Baseball and other broadcasts in the United States. The company’s strategy is clear: It is risking investment in ventures associated with providing online content,’ the expert adds.

Besides Disney, other potential candidates to acquire Netflix include Apple.
