The decade’s top 10 websites of Polish internet
During the last three years, the most popular websites in Poland have been: Google.pl, Facebook.com, YouTube.com, Onet.pl and Google.com. Among the ten favourite websites, the ones with the longest tenure are: Allegro.pl, Wp.pl, Onet.pl and Google.pl.[nbsp]
Throughout the ten years of Gemius’s research of the internet (from October 2004 to October 2014) the ranking list of the ten most popular websites underwent some profound changes. What are and what were the favourite websites of the Polish online population?
- In the 10 years’ period, the group of the most popular websites always included: Google.pl, Onet.pl, Wp.pl, Allegro.pl.
- Google.pl has been the top website only since 2006. The year earlier it was Onet.pl that enjoyed more entries, and two years earlier - Onet.pl and Wp.pl. Now Google.pl is visited by nine in every ten internet users (19.74 m).
- In the last three years, the most popular five websites in Poland (by the number of visitors) have been: Google.pl, Facebook.com, YouTube.com, Onet.pl and Google.com.
- The group of the ten favourite websites in Poland was joined by Wikipedia.org five years after its launch, i.e. in 2006. Since then it has been consistently popular. In October 2014 the online encyclopaedia was visited by nearly half of internet users (10.17 m), which gave it the eighth ranking position.
- Facebook.com kicked off in 2004. It debuted in the Polish list of most popular websites in 2010 as number nine. One year later it came fifth, and since 2012 it has held the second position. Presently, it is visited by eight out of ten internet users (16.97 m).
- YouTube.com was launched in 2005. Two years later it became one of the ten favourite websites, attracting every fourth internet user. Now it is visited by three-quarters of internet users (16.13 m), which means the third ranking place.
- The social networking site Nk.pl (former Nasza-klasa.pl) came as one of the ten most popular websites two years after it was set up, i.e. 2008. It remained in the ranking for six years.
- Early on, the list of the Polish internet audience’s favourites included websites ran by mobile phone operators. In 2004 it was Idea, and in 2005 Orange and Plus GSM.
- Gazeta.pl didn’t make it to the top ten only in 2010. It presently comes ninth – enjoying visits of four out of ten online individuals (8.51 m).
- Between 2004 and 2007, o2.pl kept the seventh position. 2008 was the last year of the website’s presence in the ranking of the favourite Polish website, it then was in the eighth position.
About the research
The data comes from gemiusAudience, an international research project conducted by Gemius in over 30 countries in Europe, Middle East and North Africa. It aims to determine the number and demographic profile of internet users and to learn about the ways in which they use the net: websites, audio and video material, or applications. The research is carried out in compliance with the international code of conduct ICC/ESOMAR.
