Most popular domestic websites in Russia
Search engines, email services, file hosting
Almost 60 million Russian internet users (80 per cent) use the internet search engine Yandex.ru. The email service Mail.ru, which offers users a free mailbox, hosting services and a website directory, as well as a search engine, is almost as popular (75 per cent).
Social networking very popular
Almost 50 million Russian internet users (66 per cent) visit the social networking website Vk.ru. Over 36 million (almost 50 per cent) visit the competitor website Odnoklassniki.ru.
– The top ten most visited websites in Russia remain fairly consistent – says Lesya Prus , industry expert and head of the Russian branch of Gemius. – Compared with last year, only two websites have a different ranking position: the social networking website Facebook has fallen to 13th place, while the weather information website Gismeteo has dropped to 14th place. Meanwhile, popularity among users has increased for the online shop Aliexpress, which first appeared in the ranking in September 2014 and is still at the same position – comment Prus.
About the research
The data comes from gemiusAudience, an international research project conducted by Gemius in around 30 countries in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. It aims to determine the number and demographic profile of internet users and to learn about the ways in which they use the internet: websites, audio and video material, or applications. The research is carried out in compliance with the international code of conduct ICC/ESOMAR.
