How old are Facebook users?
Facebook was launched on 4 February, 2004. Gemius celebrates the eleventh birthday of the social networking service by checking the age of the internet users who enter the website. The analysis is based on data collected between January and November 2014 concerning internet users over 18 years old. It concerns Belarus, Denmark, Poland, Russia, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and Hungary, which are the countries where Gemius conducts research for the entire internet (global and local websites).
It turns out that:
- Facebook is most popular among the internet users between 18 and 24 in Turkey, where it gets visited by every third user in that age group on average (31 per cent). The least interest of online audience aged 18–24 Facebook enjoys in Denmark and Hungary. The widely known social networking site is monthly visited by every sixth of them (on average 16 per cent).
- In 2014 in almost all the researched countries the largest percentage share of Facebook users above 18 years of age were individuals from 25 to 34, while the smallest part of the website’s audience was 55 or more. It was only in Denmark that the situation is quite the reverse, i.e. Facebook.com is mostly visited by people who are 55 or more, and 18–24 year olds constitute the smallest share of the audience.
- In all the analysed countries every fourth or every fifth Facebook user is 35 to 44 years old (19–26 per cent, depending on the country).
About the research
The data comes from gemiusAudience, an international research project conducted by Gemius in over 30 countries in Europe, Middle East and North Africa. It aims to determine the number and demographic profile of internet users and to learn about the ways in which they use the net: websites, audio and video material, or applications. The research is carried out in compliance with the international code of conduct ICC/ESOMAR.
