Gemius Q4 overview: highlights and facts on websites

Internet technology and research company’s Gemius data about the most visited websites from computers in Estonia showcased both stability and surprises in the final months of 2024. Data from September to December pointed out some strong leaders, highlighted changes regarding e-commerce sites, marked the reappearance of an AI platform, and showed the most and least thriving moments for the TOP 20 websites.

Google and Facebook are becoming stronger

The search engine Google and the social networking website Facebook.com have remained the unchallenged leaders, occupying the top two positions every month from September to December. Not only they have maintained their positions, but they have become even stronger leaders reaching more unique visitors in December than at the beginning of this period. Google has grown its audience by 9 percentage points (65 000 users) since September, rounding up to 682 000 Real Users from computers in December, while Facebook.com’s audience has increased by 46 000 users (also by 9 percentage points) since the beginning of autumn, from computers reaching 489 000 Real Users in December.

The only other sites that did not move a step up or down in the top but consistenty remained in their positions were wikipedia.org, microsoft.com, and instagram.com, all of them ending this period with more users than they started with.

Increased interest in e-commerce sites

As the year was comming to an end, an interest started growing towards e-commerce sites, with kaup24.ee standing out the most. From September’s 145 000 users to December’s 170 000 users, kaup24.ee marked its place as the number one choice for online shopping. For the first time this year the top was joined by temu.com and aliexpress.com, and ever since joining in October, temu.com has remained as the second most preferred e-commerce platform, ending the year with 151 000 users from computers. Even though being present for only one month, aliexpress.com entered the top in November with 128 000 users, and ranked as the third most popular e-commerce site during this period.

AI returns to the spotlight

After being absent for a few months, an AI platform once again entered the top at the beginning of autumn. Joining the top with 120 000 users and ending the year with 144 000 users reached from computers, the AI chatbot chatgpt.com has remained as one of the TOP 20 most visited websites during these months. After chat.openai.com left the top back in May, the start of a new academic year, therefore the rising need for support in work and learning, potentially was the cause of the sudden return of another AI platform.

Where there are highs, there are lows

October brought joy to many websites, as the majority of them experienced huge rises in the number of users, with the two of the most significant increases being for chatgpt.com and lhv.ee, both of them reaching by 20 percentage points more users than the previous month. However, the saying that there comes low after the high was true for November, which followed with not so pleasent drops in the numbers for almost all of the websites, a few of them losing even half or more of the users gained during the rise in October. The most significant loss, by 25 percentage points, was experienced by ria.ee – it lost 12 000 users more than it gained in October.

The top is based on data about internet audience that is aged between 15 and 74 years of age, is from the territory of Estonian state and visit sites from computers. gemiusAudience research is based on a complex and modern methodology that allows to see the number of real persons (Real Users) within a page, rather than looking at cookies or IP addresses that do not show the number of actual persons visiting the relevant page.
